FAQ: How Do I Include GICs in My Investment Plan?
GICs are just another form of fixed-income investment. In your asset allocation you will want to reflect this amount in GICs as part of your fixed income percentage along with any bond funds you hold.
For example: if you had a $1,000,000 RRSP with $100,000 in GICs, $300,000 in Bond funds, and $600,000 in equities then your asset allocation would be 60/40 between equity and fixed income.
You can set the asset allocation in Foundation > Investment Plan
You can also fine tune the asset allocation account by account in Planning > Projections > Advanced Options.
And if you need to adjust the asset allocation year by year because the GICs are just a temporary “cash wedge” then you can adjust the asset allocation year by year in Planning > Projections > Table.
Another option would be to add GICs as “Cash” in your asset allocation for the RRSP with a slightly higher return. This could be done using the Investment Plan to apply to all your accounts or the Advanced Options to apply to only one account type.
