FAQ: Why Are Results Exactly the Same for Different Decumulation Orders?

There are multiple possible reasons for the decumulation order not making a difference.

  1. One reason could be that you’ve entered overrides (Red) that have forced the model to calculate certain parameters (like income, withdrawals, contributions etc). If the platform is “stuck” due to overrides and has no levers to pull then the results could be the exact same.
  2. It could be that another AI Strategy like the RRSP Meltdown is causing enough income that there isn’t a need for additional income and the order of R vs NR doesn’t matter.
  3. The other reason could be there is no non-registered account by the time retirement has started so the order of R vs NR doesn’t matter.
  4. The AI Strategies for retirement are also driven by retirement age, so it’s possible your retirement age in your Profile is set incorrectly.
  5. It’s also possible that the model has enough income from CPP/OAS/min. RRIF etc to meet your target after-tax spending goal, in which case additional withdrawals are not required and therefore the withdrawal order doesn’t matter.
  6. And finally, make sure the model is Recalculated between changes in parameters. On the top right of the Projections section the Recalculate button will show when the model needs to be recalculated.
