FAQ: How Can I Force the Platform to not Take GIS or OAS Benefits
How to Override GIS and OAS in Adviice
You can use the override tool to manually enter a zero value for OAS and GIS benefits across all future years.
Steps:
- Go to the Projection Table
- Open the projection table from the Plan screen.
- Scroll to the GIS or OAS Columns
- Locate the specific columns for government benefits.
- Apply a Manual Override
- Enter a value of 0 in the first year you want to start the override.
- Use the cascade feature to apply that same value through to the end of the plan (e.g., to age 110).
- Repeat for Each Person
- Apply the same override to each household member receiving benefits.
- Recalculate the Plan
- Review the updated results to see the impact of removing these benefits.
Other Override Options
The override tool allows you to change any assumption in the plan, including:
- Government benefits (OAS, GIS, CPP)
- Income (employment, pension, etc.)
- Expenses
- Withdrawals
- Rate of return
This gives you full control to test any scenario, including more conservative or severe assumptions.
Things to Keep in Mind
- Stress Testing: Removing GIS or OAS can help identify how dependent the plan is on these benefits.
- Extreme Cases: Setting benefits to zero is a conservative approach and may result in significantly lower success rates.
- Plan Flexibility: Overrides are best used for testing edge cases rather than as a default approach for regular planning.
