How to Set the Projection Section Start Year

In the Projection Section you have the choice to change the start year to: last year, next year or the current year.

This functionality gives you the ability to have the balances you entered in Discovery > Assets/Debts be treated as January 1st values in the year you have selected.

This is helpful when:

  1. Starting a plan late in the year:  Instead of entering starting values in the current year, it may be easier (and more accurate) to enter current values and have them treated as starting values for the following year.
  2. Tax planning for the previous year: It may be helpful early in the year to shift the projections to the previous year in order to plan optimal RRSP contributions before end of February.

How Does it Effect Your Data

  1. Income and expense: This data is linked to ages, and so it won't be effected by changing the start date of your projections.
  2. Assets, Debts and Contribution Rooms (RRSP, TFSA, FHSA etc): These values will be assumed to be accurate as of January 1st of the year you have selected.
  3. Overrides: One important consideration is that moving the start year into the future will cause you to lose any overrides for past years. We recommend you make a copy of any scenario before moving the start date into the future.
  4. Metrics: The metrics shown below the Projection Charts are based largely reflected in Today's $s. Shifting the chart back and forth will change these values, but only by the inflation factor between plan start years.
